Style Tips for Writing on the Web
Writing for the web- Tips for NH web publishers.
Content is King
Users evaluate the credibility of a website by the quality of its content. The quick test for content value is to ask, how do my readers benefit from this information. A history of X disease in the North will lose most readers fast, 3 ways to prevent it will immediately benefit the user and keep thier attention.
Break Content Into Chunks
People scan web pages for information, Make it easy for them to get it by breaking your ideas into chunks.
You can make your page more scanable by using;
- meaningful sub-headings
- bulleted lists
- one idea per paragraph (users will skip over any additional ideas if they are not caught by the first few words in the paragraph)
- the inverted pyramid style, starting with the conclusion
- half the word count (or less) than conventional writing
Check Everything Twice
The NH website gets over 600,000 external hits per month. Knowing that your content will be viewed by a large audience you will want to make sure that spelling and facts are correct. Always have two people read your content prior to publishing. Something that sounds good in your head when you read it could have a completely different meaning when read by other people
