What is CIX?

The Clinical Information Exchange (CIX) service securely and efficiently exchanges patient information between Northern Health testing facilities and physician's offices. The service utilizes Northern Health’s Cerner Millennium Health Information System (HIS) and physicians’ Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems to deliver lab, blood bank, pathology, and radiology results electronically. By delivering information securely and quickly right into physicians’ EMRs, CIX eliminates manual faxes, printouts and scanning.

What is CDX (Clinical Document eXchange)?

CDX is a clinical document distribution service developed by Interior Health. Northern Health and Interior Health have collaborated to facilitate the sharing of Health Authority clinical documents to EMR systems using this service. This system also allows EMR to EMR exchange

Benefits of CIX

Benefits include:

  • Improved patient care
  • Improved patient privacy
  • Faster access to clinical information,
  • Increased office productivity
  • Reduced office costs. (Note: Northern Health is not charging EMR vendors for integrating into CIX; however, some vendors may charge their clients an additional fee for installation and licensing to offset their interface development costs.)

How do physicians participate?

The physician/physician office needs to have an EMR and Internet access.

  1. If you don’t have an EMR, arrange to have one installed. Options:
    1. Visit the Canadian EMR website
    2. Visit the Doctors of BC Technology Office
    3. Ask your colleagues for advice
  2. If you have an EMR, please check with your EMR vendor to ensure your system supports CIX. (See list below of qualified EMRs.)
  3. Be prepared to accept the following three conditions for using CIX:
    • Agree to discontinue fax delivery of results after 5 business days of validation for results which are now being received electronically from Northern Health.
    • Agree to gain office access to the Cerner Millennium system (for when CIX is unavailable.)
    • Agree to follow the CIX service support process
  4. If your EMR is supported and you accept the service conditions, click here to apply for CIX. Your application can take up to 5 business days to complete.
